Construction is underway on the new MFB fire station in Derrimut, which will deliver a significant boost to fire services in Melbourne’s western suburbs.
Marking the start of works today, Member for Kororoit Marlene Kairouz said the new station would be a milestone for sustainable design, while providing firefighters the modern facilities they need to serve the community.
The $10 million Victorian Government-funded project will be Australasia’s first five-star sustainable fire station on the Green Star rating system.
Derrimut will also be the largest MFB fire station to be built since South Melbourne Fire Station was completed almost 30 years ago.
The state-of-the-art facility is set to open at the end of next year and will replace the current fire station at Boundary Road, North Laverton, which was built in 1991.
The knowledge and skills learnt during the planning and construction process will be applied when building future fire stations to increase sustainable design and build practices throughout the fire services.
When fully operational, the station will house up to 16 firefighters and four appliances, and will be able to better meet future population growth in Derrimut and surrounds, which is expected to continue.
Its purpose-built design will also meet the needs of local residents who are situated around grasslands, new estates and industry.
The new station will also include a workshop, gymnasium, storage room, change rooms and large meeting room.
The large premises will also contain a protective equipment room, as well as a concrete concourse to conduct training drills and community engagement activities, such as Open Days.
The brigade will service not only the Derrimut community, but will also support surrounding emergency services agencies for a range of incidents including motor vehicle accidents, grassland, residential and industrial fires and Emergency Medical Response.
