Announcement: Helping Children in Kororoit Grow

The Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Foundation wants to help schools and centres in Kororoit teach children the joys of growing, harvesting, preparing and sharing.

The Foundation is already working with more than 1700 Australian early years centres, primary and secondary schools delivering pleasurable food education, including five schools and centres from the Kororoit district:

  • Deer Park North Primary – see the kitchen garden program in action at Deer Park North PS in this great clip from Gardening Australia
  • Derrimut Primary School
  • Goodstart Early Learning -Derrimut
  • Kool Kidz Ravenhall
  • Brookside P-9 College.

Pleasurable food education engages children in growing their own food, learning different ways to cook their produce and encourages them to try different tastes, textures and smells when they sit with their peers to taste what they have cooked.

By learning how to grow, harvest, prepare and share fresh, seasonal delicious food when they are young, children can develop positive food habits that continue into their adult life.

There are also many flow-on benefits to a kitchen garden program. Schools and centres can use kitchen and garden activities to enhance learning and promote family and community engagement.
